Updates from Dr. Walsh

An ongoing series of informational entries

New Office Update

January 30th, 2023

Unfortunately, we have had many changes since Hurricane Ian but we are now settled in a new location at 16880 McGregor Blvd Unit 102 in Fort Myers at the Amazon Park complex. The location is close to the Sanibel Outlets for anybody familiar with the area. We will be operating similarly to how we have in the past but sadly lost our Hydromassage bed in the flood. Our office sustained significant flooding that reached almost four feet of water inside the building but we hope to continue building better than before at our new location.

Blood Drive on Sanibel, Friday at the Community House

December 17th, 2020

Lee Health will be having a blood drive on Dec. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Community House in Sanibel. If you have never given blood before, you should consider doing so for several reasons:

  • Your donation could be life saving
  • You can find out important information post-visit like cholesterol levels, blood pressure, blood type or even if you are currently positive for coronavirus
  • You can lower iron levels in your blood through donation which some studies have shown to decrease the risk of heart issues

If you decide to give blood, it is best to stay hydrated and not plan on doing any rigorous physical activity following your visit. For more information on blood donations, please visit Lee Health's site.

Troubleshooting Hip Pain

September 1, 2020

One of the most common injuries that I will treat is pain at the side of the hip. This is an especially sensitive area because the bursa can get irritated by the misalignment and can create swelling inside the joint. While chiropractic adjustments are by far one of the best ways to get rid of the issue, it is also important to understand why these injuries are occurring.

In my experience, hip pain usually comes from excessive stretching of the piriformis muscle. The external rotation of the hip joint during this stretch is often too much to handle and the joint will be pushed out of alignment. I advise my patients to skip the stretch unless they are suffering from piriformis syndrome (a painful condition where one of the muscles in the buttock area will press against the sciatic nerve.) If the patient wants to be proactive with keeping their piriformis muscles loose, I would advise instead to do the therapy where they sit on the tennis ball and massage the area.

Other instigators for hip problems are excessive sitting, sitting with your legs crossed, and pressure on the hip while sleeping on your side without a pillow. Rarely do hip issues come from physical activity in my experience but they do on occasion. After getting the hip adjusted I usually recommend icing the area for 20 minutes to help with any inflammation that is occurring within the joint. I personally prefer to adjust the area with an Arthrostim because I feel the hip can move out of place by going too far posterior, anterior, lateral, medial, caudal, cephalic, internally rotated or externally rotated and being specific with the line of drive for an adjustment is important.

Hip pain often can radiate down the outside of the leg and sometimes into the groin area. If you suspect you may have an alignment issue with your hip, please feel free to contact our office for a free consultation.

Learning about CBD

October 15, 2019

Cannabidiol (CBD) products have grown rapidly in popularity over the last few years because of changing legislature that has given opportunities for health care providers to utilize the plant for wellness purposes. The difference between a CBD oil you can get from a local chiropractic office like ourselves and the kind of hemp that is obtained with a medical marijuana card is the level of THC (a component that is psychoactive) and is more tightly regulated as a result. CBD oil, by law, must contain less than 0.3% THC. While many CBD oils will have this minor amount of THC in them (0.29% for example), you can obtain specialized CBD oils which are guaranteed to have even closer to a virtual zero amount of THC.

What makes some CBD oils better than others? For one, it is important to know if the hemp plant is being grown right. Make sure you are finding a brand that is grown in a USDA approved facility and preferably is being grown organic. The strength of the CBD is measured in milligrams and will vary depending on how much the patient needs for their particular symptoms. For example, a dosage for a pet would be 250 mg while a human with more intense symptoms may need something as strong as 3000 mg. Another factor to consider is if the company is filling your oil with a lot of filler instead of hemp extract. You should be able to determine this through the ingredient list on the back. You should also look for a full spectrum hemp extract over the cheaper CBD isolate if possible.

CBD is not intended to cure, diagnose or treat any diseases according to the FDA but some patients have found that it has been especially helpful in reducing anxiety, insomnia and pain. If you have more questions about usage of CBD, please contact our office.

Ileocecal Valve Dysfunction

September 1, 2019

To the right of our navel lies an important structure that allows food to pass from our small to large intestine. The ileocecal valve is vital to our digestive system but it can also present us with problems when it becomes obstructed with food roughage. Common symptoms of a blocked valve include but are not limited to; hip pain, digestive issues, shoulder issues, and low back pain. If you include coffee, nuts, seeds, popcorn or raw vegetables in your diet you have a higher chance of causing obstruction to your ileocecal valve. If you suspect you may have this issue or are looking for treatement, please visit out office.

Many Migraines Originate From Cervical Issues

June 24, 2019

Patients that experience migraines might be surprised to find that misaligned vertebra in the upper part of their neck may be the culprit. As these problematic spinal segments create pressure on the nervous system, there is a chance the patient may start getting dizzy, nauseous, suffer from visual issues or get vertigo. Our office can identify these misalignments and treat the underlying causes with specific chiropractic care as well as other forms of passive therapy. If you or somebody you know is dealing with these issues, getting them examined can be an easy way to guiding them back to full health.

Neuro Emotional Therapy

May 1, 2019

Some patients may experience physical symptoms that stem from emotional or mental stressors. Our body can manifest these stresses physically and it can often mimic other injuries in presentation. At our office, we can determine if these issues have a neuro emotional component. If we find an instance of this, we can perform the appropriate therapy to restore the body to wellness. This technique is not performed as a counseling therapy for the patient but rather to restore the working body to proper function and to discontinue the mental stressor from impacting the physical body in a negative way.

Carpal Tunnel Therapy

April 9th, 2019

If you've experienced discomfort in the wrists or hands and are thinking about possible medical intervention, consider a chiropractic treatment on the area to see if the symptoms resolve. In our office, we find that many issues of discomfort with the wrist are from a small bone called the lunate becoming misaligned and creating a lot of problems. While it is just one of the many bones in the hand, it is by far the most misaligned. We often will use an activator device to treat the issue which most patients find very low force. If you think that you may have an issue with one of the bones in your wrist, feel free to give us a call and we can consult with you whether a chiropractic treatment on the area could be beneficial.

Issues with the Jaw

March 26th, 2019

Jaw pain and discomfort can affect your quality of life but there can sometimes be an easy resolution. At Sanibel Chiropractic, we can check your jaw alignment to see if the joint is moving smoothly and functioning well or if there is an issue that might need to be corrected. We check 8 different directions of misalignment at the office and use a low force instrument to provide a correction. Sometimes, skull pain, neck pain, dental pain, or headaches can occur from the jaw not functioning properly so if you have any of these symptoms, let us know so we can get you on your way back to proper health and wellness.

Dairy Sensitive?

March 20th, 2019

Our office is providing food, chemical and supplement testing during your visit. If you are wondering how your body is handling certain foods such as gluten, dairy, etc., we will be happy to assist you. If you show up as having a sensitivity to the substance, we will provide a therapy to aid you in desensitizing. On the flip side, we can help you determine which supplement your system is responding better to through muscle testing. If you have any questions about the process, please feel free to contact Dr. Walsh.

Lecture This Monday

March 13th, 2019

Dr. Walsh will be giving a lecture at Amavida Living on Monday the 18th on "Conservative Care for Joint Pain." Topics that will be included in the presentation are preventative care, therapies, warning signs, imaging and maintenance. There will also be a time available for anybody with questions regarding any of the topics.

How Long Does an Appointment Last?

March 5th, 2019

This is a question our office has been getting quite a lot (especially during the heavy season on Sanibel.) For a new patient, average times for a visit fall between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the amount of patient issues, whether the patient needs special assistance, and what kind of therapies we decide to perform. Followup visits usually can be done at a much quicker pace because of our familiarity with the patient and will last anywhere from 10-20 minutes. If our patients ever have any concerns about length of the visit we will try to accommodate them to the best of our abilities if possible.
